Expohedifica 2019 is 5 months away and Ignacio Falcone, BIM Forum Chile Director and ICAFAL Property Projects CEO, showed the benefits of Building Information Modeling, since will be an area for this technology at the most important exhibition in the construction sector. This will be held from October the 2nd to the 5th. On this context, Falcone said: “Expohedifica is the biggest event for the construction industry in Chile, it gathers superiors, builders, contractors, project managers and clients. BIM will be the new working method, the new way of meeting. It is important that all the industry know it and make the best of it” BIM Director said: “It is important to encourage its implementation, because it is economically profitable and has multiple benefits at the project’s design, construction and execution”. Falcone remarks that companies must implement Building Information Modeling, because “it will be mandatory from 2020” Do you think that BIM implementation must be fomented in Chile? Why? No doubt. It is economically profitable and has multiple benefits at the project’s design, construction and execution. Now a days, the Government is requiring it for its contracts and will be mandatory from 2020. This is why many companies are implementing it on its project. Those that do not implement BIM will lose competitiveness. Every day are more companies implementing this method, which are BIM’s benefits and advantages to construction? There are many discussions about it, but with no doubt, the main benefits are: For the business, it allows a better project evaluation. Decision-making is made with more complete, clear and opportune information. We can see it on three dimensions. For the design process, it allows a better integration, coordination and work review from all areas involved. It improves the response time and reduces fail rate and its costs. It forces designers to deliver better and more detailed information. For the construction, the method identifies problems at initial stages and improves the construction planification. It keeps RDI project’s information requirements at the minimum error decreasing delays problems. For the operation process, as BIM gathers many information, it is possible to keep a better control and planification of its use and parts’ maintenance, improving their lifetime. This is how the technology shows savings during the operation and improves delivery times. Do you think that BIM’s presence is important at an event as EXPOEDIFICA? EXPOEDIFICA is the biggest event for construction industry in Chile, it gathers superiors, builders, contractors, project managers and clients. BIM will be the new way of working for all them, their place of meeting, so it is fundamental that they know and take advantage of it. EXPOEDIFICA is the natural place where all people part of BIM can gather around and start working together. How is Chile in comparison with other countries at the use of this technology? Chile is in advantage in comparison with other Latin American countries, even some European countries. Personally, I think this is because the push of the BIM order in 2015, and the implementation agreement made with United Kingdom, through CORFO. This allowed that many Chilean companies investigated and implemented this method. In ICAFAL, we have been implementing the method since 2011, which allows us to be more prepared than our local competition and work among big companies. We have received delegations from Uruguay, Medellin, Bogota, Costa Rica and DIB to share experiences. And also, we have been invited to show our improvements in relevant events such as Autodesk University in Las Vegas What have changed and which are BIMs news? As all big changes, there are people that support and those who resist. For some companies the implementation was easy, for other difficult. We have trained teams, contractors and directors to be leader in the implementation. It was not easy, but most of them can see the benefits of the model. We can deny that the Government position and the obligatory nature of the implementation of this technology had pushed those with resistance to the model. Once they use it and know it, it is impossible to not notice the positive effects generated. The main challenge for any company that starts working with BIM is to change workers’ mentality. Now, all work is collaborative, with instant communication within all project’s areas. It is impossible to work isolated. At the training level, what work opportunities does this technology bring? For the implementation of this method, the training is vital. Nowadays there are many companies training to use this service. Due to the dynamic and constant methodologic development of the industry, work opportunities are innumerable for those that are fluent and know the tool. Once again, CORFO is supporting workers through many training scholarships, impulsing the use of this model.
